The best approach to living with this condition is to adapt the motto of P4P: encourage, educate, empower, exercise! This is a 2.5 hour workshop designed to explain how and why the P4P Method of exercise programming works best for people with Parkinson's disease. The workshop is open to anyone interested in understanding the components behind designing a safe, effective, progressive, and structured exercise program for a person with PD. The exercise programs are meant to be practiced daily as a lifestyle augmentation. Exercising daily with the P4P Method will help to enhance functional movement, independent living, and ensure the most optimal quality of life possible. The centerpiece of the P4P program is the Pilates Method. The Pilates Method is the ideal fitness training modality for all stages of Parkinson's disease. Pilates develops strong core muscles to support upright posture and alleviate back pain, teaches a mind-body approach to exercise, and strengthens the musculoskeletal system overall to produce graceful movement. Exercise principles of the Pilates Method include breathing, axial elongation, core control, spine articulation, alignment, centering, concentration, and movement integration, all of which enhance physical and mental awareness, and are relevant to maintaining fluid movement in each stage of Parkinson’s disease. The P4P workshop outlines 4 pillars of importance in managing PD, and emphasizes the pillar of exercise. Since PD is a progressive condition for which there is currently not a cure, one must focus on attenuating disease progression and maintaining the best quality of life possible. This correlates directly to exercise as a primary lifestyle component, and Pilates is the safest, most effective, and easily accessible fitness training modality for all ages, physical types, and stages of PD. This workshop will discuss the condition of Parkinson's, explain what is the Pilates Method and how and why it is ideal as a primary non-pharmacological approach for staying fit while living with PD. An explanation of the 4 pillars of care and how to use the P4P Method for each stage of PD will be covered. Finally, a sample sequence of how to structure programming will be taught, and an exercise progression will be experienced.
